Abstract

This paper estimates the effect of improved maize variety adoption on farm income in the Tolon District of Ghana. The study covered the 2017/2018 farming season and involved 160 randomly selected maize farmers from four communities in the district. A regression with endogenous treatment effect model, which accounts for selection bias arising from both observable and unobservable factors was used to estimate the effect of improved maize variety adoption on farm income. The results indicate that men have lower probability of adoption while adoption increased with extension contact, access to fertilizer subsidy and cattle ownership but decreased with the cost of adoption. The results further indicate that adoption is significantly and positively related to farm income. Adoption of improved maize varieties increased gross farm income of maize farmers by GH¢852. Farm income also increased with farm size and cattle ownership but was lower for female farmers. Institutional factors such as provision of agricultural extension advisory services and subsidized fertilizer are essential to promote adoption of improved varieties; hence these services should be made readily available to farmers. Addressing the problem of inadequate extension staff and logistical challenges confronting extension workers are some of the pragmatic steps required to promote adoption of improved varieties in order to improve farm incomes. Furthermore, subsidized fertilizer should be made available to farmers on time and in the right quantities to enhance adoption and farm incomes, while farmers should be encouraged to rear livestock as this enhances both adoption and farm income.

Abstract

A number of improved feeding practices such as stall feeding, rotational grazing, and tethering can help increase livestock productivity in Ethiopia. The main aim of this paper is to determine what factors affect the adoption of on such improved feeding practice; i.e.  Stall Feeding (SF) and the choice of animal or season for its application. A bivariate probit model was estimated using observations from 367 rural farmers in Northern Ethiopia.Production risk and the frequency of shock are found to be key determinants. As expected, the results from bivariate model revealed that the expected yield positively influenced SF adoption decision and its full-year application while yield variability and risk of yield failure had a negative effect on SF adoption decision and its full-year application. Likewise, previous animal shocks positively contribute to SF adoption.  The major contribution of this paper is its explicit treatment of production risk, shock and time preference in the decision to adopt and apply SF. Expected benefits that the farmer can derive from low production risk due to SF adoption should be included in the promotion agenda of SF practice. The implication is that intervention that reduces the variance of return and exposure to downside risk are some desirable in the adoption and choice decision.

Abstract

Production or supply of domestic cocoa cannot fulfil the demand for cocoa in domestic and international markets. Furthermore, there were many old cocoa plants, damaged, unproductive and attacked by pests and diseases with mild, medium to serious condition in 2008. Cocoa production still depends on the weather, which can result in the undetermined change of cocoa price. This problem will fluctuate and if this happens continuously then volatility of cocoa price tends to be high. This research uses historical volatility method to measure the price volatility of cocoa in 2007 until 2016. It indicates that volatility of Indonesia cocoa price is high. In order to determine whether or not volatility of cocoa price affects Indonesian cocoa’s exports, stationary tests, cointegration tests and Error Correction Model (ECM) are used. Its result shows that cocoa price volatility and cocoa exports variable are cointegrated and they have negative relation both in the short term and long term. In addition, the variables of volatility cocoa and cocoa exports in Indonesia are out of equilibrium.

Abstract

This study aims to 1) Determine the production, production costs and income of farmers who follow the Food Independent Village Program and who do not follow in the Ngunut Village, Ponorogo Regency. 2) Analyze the factors that influence the production of rice farmers who follow and who do not follow the Mandiri Food Village Program in Ngunut Village, Ponorogo Regency. 3) Analyzing the allocative efficiency of the production of rice farmers who followed and who did not participate in the Food Independent Village Program in Ngunut Village, Ponorogo Regency. Data analysis method used to determine the factors that influence rice farming in Ngunut Village, Babadan Subdistrict is income analysis, multiple linear regression, and allocative efficiency analysis using SPSS application. The results showed that 1. Rice farmers who participated in the Desa Mandiri Pangan Program produced an average of 3 tons of rice while farmers who did not participate in the 1.5-ton Food Independent Village Program. Farmers who participated in the Mandiri Pangan Village Program spent production costs of Rp. 5,933,141, while for the income obtained was Rp. 8,850,772. Farmers who did not participate in the Mandiri Food Food Program spent production costs of Rp 5,623,610 while for the income obtained was Rp 1,496,703. Production factors for rice farming were in Ngunut Village, Babadan Subdistrict, namely seeds, petrochemical fertilizer, orgasm fertilizer, and Bio Prisma fertilizer.

Abstract

This paper is designed to review opportunities, constraints and contributions of industrial development on economic growth in Ethiopia. Sources such as scholarly publication, News and magazines, Books and chapters, Conference proceedings, government documents, theses and Dissertations have been reviewed. The review result indicates that industrial sector have substantial contribution to economic growth that helps to create a large portion of the resources needed to fund social development programs in the country. In addition, creation of employment and hence generation of income take place in the sector directly and are indirectly fostered in other sectors like agriculture or services through their linkages to industry. However, financial constraints, shortage of raw materials supply and lack of skilled manpower were identified as the main obstacles to the development of the sector. Finally the review argues that high rate of capital accumulation is a necessary condition for bringing about structural transformation and increased level of production and productivity to give rise for industrialization and the use of appropriate combination of skilled manpower, modern and suitable technologies and investment on both public infrastructures and manufacturing activities should be made.

Abstract

The potency for developing cyber extension should be utilized by agricultural extension worker in order to enrich extension material. However. It seems that the development of cyber extension was experiencing various obstacles. Based on that condition, this study aims to analyze the factors influencing the performance of cyber extension in utilizing cyber extension. The types of data used in this study were primary and secondary data. Primary data was obtained by conducting interviews with respondents. 87 respondents were determined purposively. Secondary data was obtained from documents on extension activites in Malang Raya Region. Path analysis was used in this study to answer the research objectives. Most respondents are still classified young, have a relative high education level and have a work period of less than 12 years. The result showed cyber extension socialization, personal interaction and perception of agricultural extension worker factors significantly influenced agricultural extension worker behavior.  Meanwhile, factors of cyber extension socialization, perception the of agricultural extension worker and the behavior of agricultural extension worker  significantly influenced the performance of agricultural extension worker in utilizing cyber extension. Only socialization and the perception of agricultural extension worker had both direct and indirect influences, where the socialization factor was the only factor with the greatest total influence value on the performance of agricultural extension worker in utilizing cyber extension. The performance of agricultural extension worker in utilizing cyber extension needed to be improved, one of which was through socialization. Socialization effort was carried out in order to increase understanding of cyber extension usefulness to agricultural extension worker. In addition, to stimulate the use of cyber extension, it was necessary to provide incentives to agricultural extension workers who utilize cyber extension.
